P ri meste Suruč tam v januári otvorili najväčší z nich. V stanovom mestečku sú dve nemocnice, sedem ošetrovní a dostatok priestorov, ktoré môžu slúžiť ako učebne pre 10-tisíc detí.
Ďalší tábor otvoria vo februári v Mardine na východe krajiny.
Väčšina z 1,7 milióna sýrskych utečencov v Turecku však žije mimo táborov: u príbuzných či známych, niekedy však na ulici alebo v nevyhovujúcich opustených domoch na chudobných predmestiach veľkých miest.
Často to vytvára napätie vo vzťahoch s miestnym obyvateľstvom.
Utečenecké tábory sú príšerným miestom na život. Zúfalí ľudia si ich však volia radšej, ako by vo svojej domovskej krajine riskovali smrť.
