Dear FAI Members,
You will recall that the Krakow General Conference in 2003 adopted the following motion with regard to the new FAI logo :
“We propose to open the opportunity for all FAI Members to make new proposals or adjustments to the logo proposed today by Executive Board. Because of the essential need to move forward quickly, we further suggest the deadline for submission of such proposals be set at the end of 2003. The Board is tasked with carefully considering these members’ proposals and making a final decision.
The final decision of the Board is to be circulated to all members with detailed explanations for the decision taken.”
Several members submitted proposals. The common theme running through all these proposals was a wish to retain the essential elements of FAI’s identity – the earth and the eagle – in some form. The proposals were all carefully evaluated both by the Executive Board and by FAI’s graphic design advisers, taking into account also the results of the work done prior to the Krakow General Conference. It became apparent that it was not possible to reconcile the symbol that had failed to achieve the necessary two-thirds majority in Krakow with the various inputs from members and to produce a new symbol that was graphically effective.
Conscious of the need to move forward and to avoid causing a loss of recognition, tradition, and prestige without compensatory gains, the FAI Executive Board therefore decided to revert to the FAI’s familiar bird on a globe, to give it a "face-lift" so that it was more clearly an eagle, and to introduce a colour scheme that brought out better the underlying nobility of the image.
The basic symbol adopted is as shown here :
A wide range of variations will be possible for the purpose of identifying FAI Commissions, Championships and other events. An additional panel will be added at the bottom of the rectangle into which this information can be inserted. Work is in hand on the graphic charter which will describe all these possible variations precisely, and define how the symbol is to be used.
The new symbol will start to be used by FAI from the month of July 2004 onwards. It must be used by FAI Members as soon as the graphic charter is published for all new publications, communications and other articles. We hope that all members will be able to phase in the new symbol as soon as possible, and progressively to phase out use of the previous symbol during the FAI’s centenary year, 2005.
Yours sincerely,
Max Bishop
Secretary General
